Our house is right near the school bus stop, so apparently our ghost has developed a fan club. The first morning after we hung it up, I heard a bunch of kids yelling outside and thought something happened. Nope. They were all pointing at the ghost. Now almost every morning I see the younger kids looking at it while they wait for the bus. One little boy even yelled “BYE GHOST” when the bus pulled away LOL. It’s such a silly thing but it honestly makes me smile. At night it looks even better because of the warm glow. My only regret is putting it up this early because now my children are begging me to decorate the entire yard.
We’ve lived on this street for almost nine years and there’s one family two houses down that wins our neighborhood Halloween decorating contest basically every year. My husband jokingly told me we were finally taking them down this year, so I ordered the ghost mostly as our “secret weapon.” I’m not kidding, it worked. The judges kept coming back to the porch because of it, especially once it got darker and the ghost was glowing. We actually won first place. The neighbors who normally win came over afterwards and asked where we found it 😂. They were good sports about it. It feels surprisingly well made too. I have a 16 year old daughter, which means most things I think are cute are apparently embarrassing. I unpacked this while she was at school and hung it on our porch. When she got home I was fully prepared for an eye roll. This has never happened to us before. Someone posted a photo of our porch in our local neighborhood Facebook group asking “Whoever lives here, WHERE did you get the ghost??” By the next morning there were like 30 comments underneath it. My wife showed me the post and couldn’t stop laughing.
We aren’t normally the people who go crazy decorating either. We literally had pumpkins, some lights, and this ghost. Our neighbors have a little girl who is maybe four or five. The morning after we put this outside, she came over with her mom because she wanted to “meet the ghost.” She decided his name is Marshmallow.
Apparently Marshmallow now gets a goodnight wave from across the street every evening.
I bought this because I wanted something spooky, not because I expected to accidentally create a neighborhood character lol. It’s been so cute seeing the younger kids react to it. It has just enough Halloween look without being terrifying for small children.
I’ve changed how I decorate as I’ve gotten older. I used to buy a cart full of $10 decorations and cover every inch of the house. Then half of them broke and the whole setup looked cluttered.
